Mussel Prevention Reminder

To all the valued screeners:

As another Memorial day approaches, it marks the beginning of another boating season for many.  The mussel prevention program is now entering its fourth year.  Lake Nacimiento continues to be mussel-free thanks mostly to the volunteer screeners like you.

REMEMBER AS ALWAYS CLEAN, DRAIN AND DRY

ALL VESSELS REQUIRE A VALID VESSEL SCREENING PERMIT PRIOR TO LAUNCH, EXCEPT THOSE VESSEL IN THE RESIDENT VESSEL PROGRAM.

Not much has changed with the 2013 program from last year.

  • There is a new form but the old forms are still being accepted until they run  out.  If you need more forms please contact your mussel coordinator or San Luis Obispo County.
  • The Resident Vessel Program is in full swing with 5 ramps participating.  They do not need to complete a vessel screening permit.  These boats will need to be banded prior to leaving the community for maintenance or repairs.  Check with your mussel coordinator for bands and protocol for banding vessels prior to community departure.
  • Monterey County and San Luis Obispo Counties have added banding programs for both public and private ramps.  These bands may show up at your ramp.  Talk with your community mussel coordinator regarding banding protocols for your community.  See attached screener refresher packet for more information.
  • Recertification for Level I screeners is now being provided.  Recertification is every three years.  Those certified in 2010 will need to be recertified this year.  Next class is June 1, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Cal Shasta Club House.   Please contact me at rdickerson@tjcross.com or 661-831-8782  Ext. 217 if interested in attending.  Future classes will be scheduled.
